Introducing `large` macOS Apple silicon (M2) Runner
Release notes
Apple ecosystem developers can now take advantage of a new large
runner on macOS Apple silicon (M2) with 6 vCPUs and 16 GB RAM.
You can now build applications that require macOS in a secure, on-demand GitLab Runner build environment that's fully integrated with GitLab CI/CD up to 3x faster compared to the medium
runner on macOS.
Try out the new runners today by using saas-macos-large-m2pro
as the tag in your .gitlab-ci.yml file.
Problem to solve
As an Apple ecosystem developer on GitLab.com, I want to build my macOS CI jobs without needing to set up a macOS build environment and macOS Runner providing fast results to make my workflow as fast and efficient as possible. Heavier workloads on the medium
macOS runner might take longer to complete, resulting in extended wait times for build verification.
Intended users
Description
With the recently introduced EC2 mac2 pro, we want to introduce a new large
macOS runner, developers can expect significant improvements in their workflow. The 6 vCPUs
and 16 GB RAM
will allow for faster processing and more efficient resource allocation, resulting in quicker build times. This is especially beneficial for larger projects that require more processing power.
The integration with GitLab CI/CD also streamlines the development process, making it easier for developers to manage their builds, tests, and deployments. The new runner is designed to work seamlessly with GitLab, allowing developers to focus on their code rather than their infrastructure.
These runners should also allow for more consistent execution times as there won't be a busy neighbor, adding even more value for larger repositories.
