Potentially incorrect reference for radar data in central Svalbard
Hi and thank you for this great initiative!
I recently found intriguing information in this database in the study area of my PhD. Some glaciers on Svalbard have data from the 1980s that I am now revisiting with surface-coupled radar! I tried to find information on the original data but could not find the right references. I believe these are incorrectly stated in the database.
In the figure below, I am showing the data that are available on GlaThiDa in Heer Land on Svalbard. Most of them are said to be collected on the same date (1 May 1986) with survey_id=207
. That survey entry looks like this:
207,1986-05-01,1986-05-31,air,radar,"SPRI Mk. IV pulse-modulated radar system, at 60 MHz centre frequency. Mounted on a de Havilland Twin Otter aircraft. RWV of 0.168 m/ns for time-to-depth conversion.",Julian A. Dowdeswell (Scott Polar Research Institute) | Toby J. Benham (Scott Polar Research Institute),Norsk Polarinstitutt | European Commission (EPOCH CT91-0035 grant),"Dowdeswell, J.A. and Bamber, J.L. (1995): On the glaciology of Edgeøya and Barentsøya, Svalbard. Polar Research, 14(2), 105-122 (https://doi.org/10.3402/polar.v14i2.6658)",Compiled by Johannes J. Fürst and Francisco Navarro.
This points to a remote sensing paper on the glaciology of Edgeøya and Barentsøya (which is nearby but is disconnected from this site, and contains no radar). I've looked through all of Julian Dowdeswell's published papers from around that period but I cannot find a mention of these surveys in particular. I also emailed him two weeks ago but he has not responded yet.
My glaciers of interest in this region are:
- Vallåkrabreen
- Kroppbreen
- Edvardbreen
- Inglefieldbreen
- Nordsysselbreen
- Arnesenbreen
- Ragna Mariebreen
- Bakaninbreen (shown in Murray et al., 2001)
- Nataschabreen
- Skobreen
- Scheelebreen
- Doktorbreen (shown in Dowdeswell et al., 1984)
Do you know the correct reference to these data? And even better, do you have the radargrams? I am primarily interested in internal reflections from these older data, which is why this would be priceless to procure.
Thanks in advance.
Best, Erik
