[Earlier closed in favour of merged !2677 (merged), then later reopened after indication of interest.]

Intended to close #1433.

My currently speculation/hope is that adding a number to enum NodeStatus (without changing the order of earlier numbers?) will not cause sync failure.
Information regarding this from someone better informed would be most welcome.
