Proto: Add documentation comments to some low-level modules.
This is some (hopefully useful) information that I have been able to deduce while reading the code of the protocol. It may not be entirely accurate in some cases, so any corrections are very welcome. This MR does not touch any code, only comments are added (and in rare cases – modified).
