similar/same problem. Previews (1. color 2. grey 3. stroke):
sudo sane-find-scanner -q found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1909 [CanoScan]) at libusb:005:004
libsane1 Version: 1.0.27+git20190104-bionic0
...from: sane-git
Xubuntu 18.04
i am back to 1.0.27-1~experimental3ubuntu2 (Ubuntu 18.04 default) AND another USB 2.0 port (directly on the motherboard).
USB 3.0 (directly on the motherboard) are the same problem.
...my scans are perfect with the USB 2.0 port directly on the motherboard.
Is it USB 2 through the xhci protocol? I've had similar problems which required adding a USB 2 card, and it depended on the motherboard.

The problem is still reproducible for me with sane-backends 1.0.29. Gray and Lineart scans are horribly distorted, whereas Color scans are fine.

This is also an issue for the LiDE 210 scanner. For both scanner models, it only appears to affect resolutions <= 600dpi.
