postmarketos-mkinitfs-2.0: Not enough space in /boot to write initramfs-extra

Running mkinitfs. The output complains about not enough space for initramfs-extra

• I built it using pmbootstrap
• It was preinstalled on my device

Notes

After the upgrade of postmarketos-mkinitfs from version 1.6.1 to 2.0 the install script complained that /boot does not have enough free space to copy initramfs-extra. Note below that initramfs-extra is 176M and is a non-compressed cpio

oof, this isn't something I thought of pre-merge... I guess there are still folks out there using pmOS with a small (traditional) /boot partition.

I think what I'll do is default to gzip in mkinitfs for now as a "quick fix", we'll get longer boots again but at least boot won't be broken for some folks...

I also got hit with it a few days ago. Later I resolved it by moving that big initramfs-extra out of /boot and then the upgrade went smoothly. (I assume now I can safely reboot, right?)

However that was on a OnePlus 6 (enchilada) and I don't think re-sizing /boot is a viable option there – unless ofc I'm missing something obvious.

This should be resolved now, right? mkinitfs is no longer making an initramfs-extra that is too big for your boot partition? Yeah a workaround is to remove the old initramfs-extra and let mkinitfs make a new one.

Yeah the problem is basically related to osk-sdl, which we use for FDE support in pmOS. Once we move to unl0kr, we can disable compression again for the initramfs-extra and the file size is still generally under 10MB for that archive (should be much smaller than the initramfs-extra today with compression and osk-sdl...)

It was just that apk upgrade kept failing when /boot was full and so a manual intervention was necessary. I believe it wasn't able to update the kernel.

Yeah makes sense, a kernel upgrade triggers mkinitfs because required modules are upgraded with the new kernel, and those need to be updated in the initramfs so they are available on the next boot.
