Don't hyperlink trailing > characters
It's typical to write URLs in brackets, to distinguish them from text. Like http://fedoraproject.org, for example. There is even a standard (RFC, I think) calling for url:http://getfedora.org to be the standard representation, although I don't think I've seen that much at all recently.
See for example the links produced by Trac at https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/council-discuss%40lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/OPKJO5NPIFNXXEAM53AFRB3RE67EXZFK/#PIQRYGVMBJQVDMWKZQNHNXWSQBO3IIE3. Because they're in brackets, they lead to 404 errors.
An alternative to dropping the > might be to only do so if the URL is preceded by a <, or by "<url:".
