emacs and vi are popular programs, and while the default xterm-256color mode supports them (with possible caveat about colors being off compared to xterm(-new)), it is possible to switch to a TERM setting that does not. This request is for a warning when the user attempts to use a terminal mode that will break emacs or vi. I did not know to check the FAQ on the website, which suggests changing TERM under "Q: Why my arrow/HOME/END keys are not working?", so I just assumed iterm2 was horribly broken. I do not know how I ended up with ansi, I may have selected it, it may have been an old setting.
