Hosted runners on Linux for Dedicated - Limited Availability
Release notes
We are excited to introduce the limited availability of hosted runners on Linux for GitLab Dedicated.
Managing fleets of runners can be complex and require significant experience to ensure all CI/CD jobs can scale to meet the demands of developers. Hosted Runners for GitLab Dedicated, now available in Limited Availability, allows customers to use runners that are fully managed by GitLab for CI/CD jobs running on GitLab Dedicated. This solution can help reduce costs by eliminating the need for maintaining your own runner infrastructure and allowing you to pay only for the resources you use.
Hosted Runners for GitLab Dedicated brings the same security, flexibility, and efficiency of GitLab Dedicated to runners. The runners automatically scale to meet your CI/CD demands, ensuring optimal performance during peak times and for large projects. The Limited Availability release includes Linux runners in various sizes, ranging from 2 to 32 vCPUs, with 8 to 128 GB of memory.

Problem to solve
GitLab Dedicated customers currently face challenges in managing their CI/CD infrastructure, particularly when it comes to runners. These challenges include:
- Infrastructure Overhead: Customers have to provision and maintain their own runner infrastructure.
- Scalability Issues: Self-managed runners may struggle to handle varying workloads efficiently, especially during peak times.
- Cost Management: Maintaining a fleet of runners can be expensive, particularly with varying CI/CD demands.
- Performance Consistency: Customers may experience inconsistent CI/CD performance with self-managed runner setups.
- Security Concerns: Ensuring proper security measures for self-managed runners can be complex and require ongoing attention.
Proposed Solution
By introducing hosted runners on Linux for GitLab Dedicated in a limited availability capacity, we aim to address these pain points. This feature will allow customers to:
- Offload runner management to GitLab, reducing operational overhead
- Benefit from an automatically scalable runner infrastructure
- Potentially reduce costs by paying only for the resources they use
- Enjoy more consistent CI/CD performance
- Having a secure by-default runner setup
This limited availability release serves as a first step towards providing GitLab Dedicated customers with the same hosted runner capabilities that GitLab.com users enjoy, tailored to their specific needs and security requirements.
