Hypothesis generation workshop for restructure MRs
🎯 Goal
The goal of this hypothesis generation workshop is to create many ideas which we can then formulate into formal hypotheses on how we can solve a problem related to the “restructure MRs” work. After this, we'll try to assess which hypotheses have the most potential and start designing around them.
We will be using a few different methods, but the backbone is Spotify’s Thoughtful Execution Framework (article; PDF how-to; mural template).
Any problem or untapped opportunity can be solved in multiple ways. That’s why you need to create multiple hypotheses for each, and assess which one returns the most impact.
There are many kinds of templates available on how to form a good hypothesis, but the key is to articulate which change you are introducing, what effect you expect it to have, and why. You need to be able to measure the effect, otherwise the hypothesis can't be tested.
Problem statement
How might we help Sasha navigate and triage comments, findings, and changes?
📚 Prep materials
📺 Welcome video (13 min)- Get familiar with Spotify’s Thoughtful Execution Framework (PDF how-to). Optionally, if you want to learn more, read “From gut to plan”.
- Review the workshop mural, focusing on the following areas:
- Problem statement and relevant data and insights
- Workshop area (
🎀 pink area), specifically the instructions for the lighting demos and hypothesis generation.
- Test uploading a photo to this mural. You'll need to do this in the workshop, so try it out and make sure you're able to do it without any issues. Learn more about adding images to Mural.
- Continue to the activities “before the workshop”

✨ Outcomes
➡ ️ Next
You're invited to share your thoughts on how the workshop went in the retrospective issue, so we can learn and improve!
Next, Code Review designers will select one or more of the following hypotheses to design and validate:
- Allowing Sasha to search, filter, and sort items will reduce the time to find them.
- Differentiating new items will reduce the time for Sasha to find items that may require their attention.
- Separating the navigation of comments, findings, and changes will reduce the time and effort for Sasha to review them.
