Notification / To Do List re-architecture
In working on an issue for Compliance, we need to plug into the notification system. However as Compliance issues are high priority, we need the notifications to not be buried or hidden. As well, we do not want to create or add complexity to the current system as a solution. I feel the solution should be to further refine the current notification system to be more user friendly, and more intelligent in how it notifies users.
Problem Statement
Notifications and To-Dos are confusing, cluttered, and not user friendly.
Reach
This impacts all users of GitLab. I'd imagine a rating of 10, as it's part of the fundamental system of GitLab.
Impact
I would imagine this would rate a 3.0 and have massive impact for users and encourage more use of the feature as it would offer more insight and understanding of assignments, to dos, and notifications.
Confidence
In speaking with the UX team, I was informed that this has been a problem for a long time and has been something that could be better executed.
Someone put it like this, which makes a lot of sense to me: GitLab to-dos are defined by everyone else who pings you, which makes them notifications. To-dos in real life are things you define for yourself. Would be cool if we could differentiate those.
Effort
I suspect this effort could be large as the notification system and to-do list covers many pieces of the system. We would need UX/UXR, front end and back end assistance but maybe rating it a 5 for effort needed across all the groups?
