UX Manager's Strategies
Being a new manager at GitLab I wanted to get an idea of how other UX Managers were doing things. So, being a UX practitioner it seemed to make sense to begin than with some research :)
I've spoken with each of the UX Managers about how everyone manages their team and collaborating stakeholders. @nudalova suggested when I was done it might be nice to put it all together in one place so we can all see and discuss what I learned... so here we go!
Many years ago when I first started learning martial arts I found Bruce Lee's concept/philosophy of martial arts. I think it's pretty much relevant in any situation: absorb what is useful and discard what is useless
. I think that's as UX as you can get
Process Followed
- Setup Coffee Chats with each UX Manager
- Create some questions to get the conversation going:
- How are your team 1:1's setup?
- What other 1:1's do you have setup?
- What do you do about OKRs from UX to your team?
- What do you do regarding team career planning?
- What else don’t I know that I need to know?
- Interview each UX Manager and see where the conversation goes
- Write-up an Issue that captures findings, allowing the team to discuss and add to the conversation
- Results are shown in the Discussion section with each question noted in their own individual comment.
