Transition GDK to Engineering Productivity

Melissa Ushakov requested to merge mushakov-master-patch-42882 into master

What are we doing and why?

As part of promoting the Ecosystem Group to a Stage, we evaluated the vision for the Stage and the alignment of our Categories to that vision. We also evaluated the Stage team member expertise and staffing to determine if we could appropriately support all our Categories.

We found that that the GDK would benefit from transitioning to a Group with a greater focus on tooling developers need to ship code. While the Ecosystem team is focused on fostering GitLab as a platform, we want to narrow our focus to the software layer. We can advance that mission with a more dedicated focus on our Integrations, API, and Foundations Categories.

The Quality Engineering department has agreed to take ownership of the GDK Category 🎉 as it aligns with their Engineering Productivity team's focus. This Category transfer will allow Quality Engineering to further move the needle on their goal to increase the focus on our community contributions and increase productivity of GitLab team members and contributors.

This reorganization is an adjustment to how we distribute categories across GitLab, it is not a cost-savings effort.

Who is being asked to transfer?

  • To make the transition smooth and transition knowledge, Ash McKenzie will be moving from the Ecosystem Stage to the Engineering Productivity team.
  • The Quality Engineering department will be transferring one open position (GHID is 4280000009) to the Ecosystem Stage to provide a backfill for Ash McKenzie.
