Rename Manage:Workspace to Manage:Organization

Per Proposal: Adopt Workspace terminology for Remot... (Product#5129 - closed), we are naming the remote development offering workspace. This is the result of research performed by both ~"group::workspace" and ~"group::editor". ~"group::workspace" found evidence that Workspace is generally being used to describe the organizational or admin level of a tool. ~"group::editor" found evidence that Workspace is often used in relation to remote environments. We concluded that there are few tools that try to accommodate both of these concepts in one platform, and if they do, they chose different terms. The result of UX research performed around the appropriate terminology was that most respondents associated Workspace with remote development environments.

We anticipate that sharing a name with a solution that is not actually part of ~"group::workspace" will cause confusion both internally and externally. Hence we propose to rename Manage:Workspace to Manage:Organization. Manage:Organization is:

  • Better suited to describe what the team's focus actually is.
  • More inclusive of all the areas overseen by ~group::workspace. ~"group::workspace" is responsible for subgroups, projects, membership, inheritance and users. Those are all areas relating to how an Organization works in GitLab.
