Themes and Insights
The goal of this research was to provide information as to which product area (workspace or remote development) was more closely aligned with our user’s perception of the term ‘workspace’.
-
Overall, user perception of the term workspace was more closely tied to the statements provided by the Remote Development team – in fact, it was the most popular term from those statements.
-
For the current workspace team at GitLab, workspace was the fourth most closely term used for the Cloze statements from workspace group.
-
Admin Console was the most common term from those statements, followed closely by Organization and Group.
-
The user definition of workspace is therefore more closely aligned with the product goals and Jobs to be Done of the Remote Development team.
Recommendations
Workspace is for the developers.
The survey results support using the term workspace for a remote development environment over the current usage for the admin layer of the product.
What name should the workspace team use?
Admin Console was the most used term for the relevant section of statements, followed by Organization, and then Group.
However, the offering itself is not a console, and groups already exist within GitLab.
Therefore, we would recommend using the term Organization based on these survey results.
Proceed with caution.
These results were not 100% definitive.
Workspace wasn’t far and away the most popular term for any of the specific Cloze statements we tested (just the most popular overall).
If the appetite is there, more research can be done to determine naming preferences for these offerings.
We recommend pairing these results with the competitor research that the Workspace team has already done.
What’s this issue all about?
There are two product sections within GitLab that are looking at the name 'workspace'. We need to resolves which, if either of those two sections should have the name.

Additional questions
We’re just interested in determining which offering is more aligned with our users’ understanding of the term ‘workspace’, as well as if workspace can co-exist with the other offering.

What decisions will you make based on the research findings?
This research will help to decide which product area, if either, gets the name 'workspace', and possibly offers suggestions for the naming of the other section.
What's the latest milestone that the research will still be useful to you?
