Update Product Design role responsibilities

Valerie Karnes requested to merge vkarnes-pd-responsibilities into main

Why is this change being made?

At the beginning of each FY, we review the role responsibilities for product design and revise expectations at each level to add clarity. This year's changes are:

All product design roles:

  • Base requirements have been added to both the product design management and the product designer job families. This is to align with the company template for job families.

Product design management:

  • Increased focus on design quality. Managers should frequently participate in reviewing and providing feedback on UX deliverables to ensure high-quality output.
  • Added focus on UX Scorecards as part of usability. Managers should lead scorecard initiatives to ensure the areas they support are consistently measured/improved over time.
  • Emphasis on leading the vision and direction of the areas you support. Managers should not only stay involved, but be an active participate.

Product designers:

  • Requirements for each level have been added to all levels to align with the company template.
  • We've removed any references to working with/without guidance from your Product Design Manager. We do not want designers to avoid reaching out to their manager for help and support because of their level. Instead, we've aligned requirements to the results competency for each job grade.
  • The Staff Product Designer role was updated to focus on open source to further distinguish from the Principal role and to emphasize engagement with community contributors.
  • The scope of a Staff Product Designer has been updated from stage to group which aligns to how our Staff level designers are currently working. As a result, the Principal Product Designer has been updated from section to stage.
