WIP: High precision experiments don't merge

This one is so that you can see my general progress. Most likely I will be --force pushing and reverting in this branch to make previous commits cleaner.

EDIT: I have now moved this work to !383 (merged), because now it all works, and only some finishing touches are needed, like documentation.
