In a context where EAD works almost exclusively in onlineWSL_2018_paper_2.pdf environments, software is an essential part of supporting its activities. The use of free software, at first sight, is indifferent to the teacher and the student, since it is practically transparent to the users. Using a paulofreirian approach to the concepts of situated learning and communities of practice, and having as the theoretical scope of the analyzes the semiotics of French line, we analyze here the software presence on the network, the opposition free vs. owner and the concept of freedom to discuss fundamentals and some practices of free software on distance education, in an approach that privileges the elements of free culture and open science
