installation instructions do not work for debian 12 (and maybe ubuntu 23+ too)
Forgive me if this has been addressed already. I tried searching thru the issues and did not find anything like it.
When installing on debian 12 per the instructions on the nala wiki, using the keyring and nala .deb packages (not the scar .deb package), the updated version of nala from the volian archive repo will not be installed. the apt preferences file that gets installed via the nala .deb package keeps the version of nala from the volian archive repo pinned lower than the version from the stock debian repos. this probably wasn't an issue for debian 11 or ubuntu 22 b/c nala was not in the stock repos for those distros. but now that nala is in the stock repos, the pinning isn't quite right.
as I see it there are two solutions:
-
change the installation command to "sudo apt install -t scar nala"
-
change the apt preferences file to include some lines that allow nala to be installed, something like this:
Package: nala
Pin: origin deb.volian.org
Pin-Priority: 500
either one worked on my debian 12 installation.
I think folks using ubuntu 23+ would run into the same issue, but I don't currently have an ubuntu installation to check it on.
also, when installing on debian 12 using the command "sudo apt install ./volian-archive*.deb" that is listed in the instructions, apt barfs out the following error:
N: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file '/home/[user]/Downloads/volian-archive-keyring_0.1.0_all.deb' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)
everything seems to work fine after that, so I think its just a warning or cosmetic, but it might spook newer users. installing using "sudo dpkg -i volian-archive-*.deb" produces no such error.
