Update readme

This is my first pull request so hopefully I did this right, but I've edited and expanded the readme file to address recent problems with installation. I use Ubuntu, so you'll probably notice there is a distinctive Ubuntu slant to how to install things, etc. But I've tried to keep to the spirit of what you've done, while expanding it.
