In response to feedback, reopening this.
This can be treated as closing #1374 (closed) and !2550 (closed).
(Also note the alternative !2552 (closed), which checks only whether the target asset can be resolved rather than whether it is whitelisted.)
Edit: Rather than updating the version for V98 (and/or later), I am closing this for the time being (along with !2552 (closed)).
