Switch to PyBind11: Organization issue

I'll be helping Yury to complete the pybind11 move.

Here are some notes from our kickoff chat today (Yury, Linus and me):

  • Target is 31.1.2025 for a first version with passing tests
  • Branch: pybind11_new
  • Modus operandi commit-wise: Just push to the branch, no force push!
  • First we get it working on Linux x64 and then the other platforms
  • Documentation: pybind11 GH, SO, chatGPT
  • casting should be only done in convertors/type_casters.h
  • Python: 3.11.10 (for now)
  • Adding FIXME/TODO comments is okay
  • No clang-format (for now)
  • Device servers with old (<6) IDL versions need to still work

Tasks for TB:

  • get test_async.py working
  • add code coverage for the c++ code, #641 (closed)
  • Increase code coverage for python code in develop branch, merge back into pybind11_new branch
  • Adjust clang-format to have function arguments in one column when split
