### Clonezilla
Clonezilla is a bootable LiveUSB that can be used to create a compressed backup from a full disk image. It can be used on removable media, such as a Tails disk, and it excludes unused space from these backups. As a result, a 64GB Tails disk with 16GB of persistent data will produce a backup of approximately 16GB. These backups can be stored on the Clonezilla USB stick itself or elsewhere (assuming the device in use has enough USB ports...).

Clonezilla can encrypt the backups it creates. We recommend having it do so even though we will be using it to backup data that is already encrypted. This may help prevent an attacker from tampering with the Tails boot volume (as opposed to the Tails persistence volume) on your backup disk in order to compromising a restored system.

We recommend backing up periodically, especially before upgrading Tails. Our test setup includes a 256GB backup disk (~$60) and a 64GB Tails disk (~$20).
