Jra msdfs bug 14391

Passes ci. Fix for the breakage of MS-DFS links post 4.12.x. I have a different version of this patch to go into 4.12, as the master version needs to change the VFS ABI in a minor way. Includes a regression test to make sure this doesn't happen again.
