This is a combination of patches from bug 2734: https://www.nsnam.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2734 and merge request !41 (closed) that works for me on a Linux Mint 19 Tara (Ubuntu 18.04-like) machine, both for Python 2.7 and Python 3.6.
