MOOC Graphics Style
In this issue, we'll be discussing the graphics and illustrations which will accompany the text in the MOOC. This will include spot graphics with a character to tie the MOOC contents together with a consistent graphics style, as well as diagrams made from screenshots of interface elements, which show what the text is discussing on an application level. Screenshots will be captured in 4K to ensure high quality graphics which are easy to read. Graphics will be in SVG format, and will include these pixel-based screenshots.
After speaking with @marcjeanmougin & @antoviaque via videochat, I've come up with some preliminary graphics for the team to consider.
This is the sort of thing I mean by "Character". I developed this one especially for this MOOC to match better the subject matter, however, note that if we want something completely different, anything is possible. I have also made some initial variations on this character to get the creative juices flowing and encourage people to chime in with any ideas you'd like to see.
The current plan is to draw out some sketches of the general idea of each graphic and take input/feedback as we go along. This will allow people a chance to be as involved as they want to be. Here's an example of what a sketch might look like:
My goal is to wind up with graphics that compliment the contents of the MOOC and add to retention and understanding of the course material. I find characters are a great way to solve a bunch of comprehension and retention issues, as well as add to the over all fun and enjoyment of the course, which has a lot of great and very valuable content for new FOSS contributors. Also, small spot graphics such as this little code window and Git lightbulb as well, really help put the polish and shine on course materials:
I'll also be providing diagrams which include screenshots of things like using GitLab. I've included a sample here, from my book Design Made Easy with Inkscape (published by Packt) as an example:
Any feedback or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I love working with fellow FOSS folks, and of course, all graphics will be provided in Inkscape SVG formats. I'm somewhat of a guru when it comes to Inkscape, so if you have any questions, I'm happy to help you get your footing. I love to make the process as fun and painfree as possible, so let me know if there's something you'd like to see. Also, if you have issues with writing something out as a process, feel free to add it here, or open another issue with the tag "graphics", and we'll have a look at it together. Often a picture can save paragraphs of tedious explaining. :)
Cheers, and let the graphics party begin! ;)
