Supporting legacy private archives
When Mailman 2 archives are imported into HyperKitty, any stored links to posts will break. We suggest that the new site's index page contain a link to a static archive of the list's posts, as well as the date, thread, and author indexes.
Unfortunately, this method fails for private archives because of password protection. It would be nice if there were a simple way to deal with this.
Given the weakness of Mailman 2 password security, I'm not going to worry much about it in my suggestions. I'll leave that up to further discussion. Possible ways to address this need:
-
Import the old password file into .htaccess files. Problems: only works those who subscribed under Mailman 2, doesn't kick them from the archives if they unsubscribe from the list.
-
Provide a single strong password for HyperKitty to use.
-
Create a file of redirects from the Mailman 2 archives to HyperKitty. This allows nuking the archives themselves, since they will be imported into HyperKitty with different URLs. This also avoids the issue of password security.
