Usually the HMD should be quirked as non-desktop by the kernel....

I was able to reproduce the issue on Coffeelake....

Not reproducible on Haswell, Braswell and amdgpu/RX580. Still have Skylake and Coffee Lake to test.
Thanks for reporting this. Showing that vkcube and vkmark work is indeed a pointer that this is a bug in xrgears. I will try to reproduce it on one...
