Image dosen't contain Kali linux specific apps. It only holds basic debian software. Problem with release file not being valid yet on repor.mobian.org?
On a pinephone bought after july 2022, use i.e elena etcher on windows to install proper image on a SD card
On start up of phone follow instructions, and boot into kali linux
Observe that none of the kali apps are aviable, and that the only apps you have are typical debian apps like maps, firefox etc
Running commands like:
sudo apt upgrade will look for updates but now show anything to update
I was having this issue until I updated the clock settings on the PinePhone. Then I was able to run the update commands from the cli. Note Updating has broken my install almost every single time, tread carefully.
How does the updating break the install? Just to know what to expect. Mine is stable for now, however I kinda expected to see some apps being installed, maybe I need to start burp etc from the cli?
It really depends on what you install. I have had to re-install to get back to a working condition after trying to:
Update from the Software App (All apps crash with the exception of the settings app after update)
Install nethunter metapackages (Apps will install but if you try to update it will cause all apps to crash)
There was one more, but I didn't capture what I was doing before I had to re-install. I am just trying basic, basic things with this at the moment to see what it actually is, because its way different than my previous nethunter.
Thanks, looking at the little there is if of documentation, how do you actually access apps? Using kali linux you will usually find them quite easy or start from cli, nethunter you have a shop, however on nethunter pro i.e burp suite - how do I find that or others? (If you have managed to find out)
I haven't tried burpsuite yet, just wifite and that doesnt provide a "real" gui. I did get Firefox to launch from the CLI though as a test. I don't think there are any "nethunter pro" flavor apps or anything else for this yet, based off everything I have been able to find I feel real early to this party. I think that the big thing with this right now is that they have a kali distro that will run on the PinePhone, which is incredibly cool in itself. However, I really want the apps or at least a build that is stable enough to run other tools reliably.
You can sudo update and full-upgrade via the terminal.
If you use the update APP it will crash kali everytime (tried it 5-6 times and everytime the APP breaks kali)
Also if you want more apps, you can do a sudo apt update and sudo apt install kali-linux-everything, it will install ALL apps available.
It will take a lot of time but it works.
As for the "release file for http://repo.mobian.org/dist/staging/Inrelease is not valid yet" then 56 days and update won't be applied ... as mentioned by Pete, it is relevant to the pinephone time not being sync with the kali repo. Just change it to the real time and date and it will work.
Quick question for you, Gianfranco. I tried the install kali-linux-everything and after rebooting I landed on a kali desktop login screen instead of the PhoshOS login screen. I was still able to connect to services on the Pinephone but lost any sort of mobile OS interactivity. Did you run into this issue as well?
I am not at the office with the pinephone, but my bad, its NOT the kali-linux-everything that you need to install (the everything install ALL but also the headers of kali linux that you do not want ... this is nethunter). I do not recall if there is a package that install all tools, or if you need to install the packages one by one. I did so many tests LOL. Also just in case one of you decides to purchase the pinephone keyboard, DO NOT. Once the keyboard is merged with the pinephone, the usbc on the pinephone becomes useless and you will not be able to plug any external tools (ex. wifi adapter).
@gfbaggio I did not get the keyboard and I don't plan on it now, thank you again for sharing the results.
@christianse86 can you define your end state as far what you "need"? Gianfranco has done an amazing job providing the header install procedure, drivers, and just incrementally installing things in general in a way that gets this device to a functional state with any external wifi accessories that you might have. You mentioned that you are writing a guide, that is great stuff for inclusion on top of things like setting the clock properly. Cheers :)
I just remembered, you have the kali-linux-nethunter package that you can install, it comes with all the APP that your pinephone can handle I guess, and you will not loose the PhoshOS login screen and apps for the phone.
Christianse, you can do
sudo apt get update
sudo apt get upgrade
reboot
sudo apt update
sudo apt install kali-linux-nethunter
sudo reboot
and NEVER use the update APP or you will crash :-)
if you need to plug an external wifi adapter for wifi monitoriing mode, I gave the solution on my other post in the issues.
One more thing .... NEVER do a full-upgrade or a dist-upgrade.
Until now it has crashed kali for me.
Maybe in the futur it might work but for now just do upgrade.
wishes for the new year :-) I can't wait to be able to install kali directly in the pinephone, instead of the micro card. Micro cards are not made to have a lot of write read and have a short life span.
@petemck I think my goal would be to help new people get into the system quicker. I have read so many "how tos" and most are either quick, shallow or very little people oriented. So my goal would be to try to make something that summarizes in steps for people with sources how to install, handle issues etc in "nethunter pro for dummies" sort of a way. I know some people with high tech skillz or devs probably would be salty at me for this, some was that for even thinking that "auto update time" should be enabled, and fact that it wasn't would be a bug in my mind as a test manger.
But the end goal is to help new people with their phone, learning from my experiences with how tos and trying to enable people to use the system.
I cannot say STABLE hehehe.
It works but you need to remember that nethunter pro just came out and I am sure that we will have a lot of work before it becomes a very stable OS for the Pinephone Pro (even the pinephone pro still has their issues LOL). But till now I have a working phone with kali on it.
Also just to inform you that not all kali tools are apps, ex. wifite, you will not find an app wifite, but you can run it in the console. I rewrote my SD card like 10 times, just to try to make everything work and find why stuff was not working hehehe.
I did an upgrade after installing the kali-linux-nethunter package, and now I get the normal kali login screen (enter user password)
To get the PhoshOS you need to login changing the opening session.
I am attaching some pictures (sorry for the bad focus).
But now even when changing the opening session, I always get that login screen, I guess its reformat again the SD and trying to install the packages one by one to see which one crashes :-)
UPDATE:
I found a bypass for the login, once you got into the PhoshOS session, go to settings and scroll down to users.
There you can select autologin, it will work, it is just that the phone will always autologin without asking for password :-)
@gfbaggio I also just get normal kali window, but I can't find posh anywhere. Suggestions? Mine just shows icons for bt, battery, wifi, and clock...and if I go to settings an session there is nothing. I actually had to connect a USB mouse to be able to go through the phone now lol
It didn't show the same as yours, per what I could see I had: date, bt and network, not keyboard and session. I guess I need a new image and try again? haha
I followed:
sudo apt get update
sudo apt get upgrade
reboot
sudo apt install kali-linux-nethunter
sudo reboot
I get this when I try to install kali-linux-nethunter. I am fully updated and upgraded.

Hey! had the same problem. remove your /etc/apt/sources.list file and replace it with kali rolling repository. here's a CLI to work it, (reason it's broken is nmap is not installable, and all those installs rely on nmap)
@christianse86 I'm sorry man, I was inquiring further into what do you need the device to do specifically, beyond installing/updating the OS. That guide sounds like its going to be great!
@gfbaggio Dude, TY for the login bypass. I owe you coffee.
@gfbaggio@petemck I'm struggeling after making a new image and booting. I get the message "Enter passcode" - I enter 1234, but it just goes back to "Enter passcode" after doing a check. Any suggestion? make a new image a try again?
I too was looking for the apps one usually sees in Kali Linux/Kali NetHunter but they're not there. Any idea when the build will get those? Once they are out will get them with a sudo apt update && apt upgrade -y ?
I missed a lot of discussions here. I fixed most of the bugs mentioned above in my custom releases. btw, I'll push the fixes in this repo. Hopefully, we'll get a stable release soon.
@christianse86 In the recent nethunter release, everything is working fine, so closing this issue. Reopen it if you face any problems in the build.
Thanks
Hey! just to update you see my comment on his page above. had the same problem, new iso prob broken. here is the script to fix it automatically and if ur interested look comment above.
