#27 Preliminary implementation of Gel view and Gel image

This merge request is not resolving the issue #27 (closed) nor are the classes and methods here clean enough to be considered as as finished.

But it does bring a lot of changes to the overall structure and it does work. I would like to get this merged asap to reduce the conflicts for developments that would be taken up in during the following few days.
