Revert event controller use in canvas

Straightforwardly revert the switch to Event Controllers in the Canvas, since they're not needed for the upcoming 1.4 release and only cause regressions.

The Draft status is to prevent merging before 1.4 is branched. Retargeted the branch at 1.4.x now.
