Maybe you have seen this? Edit > Resize page to drawing or selection. (Shift+Ctrl+R)

Yes I've seen this, its great to be able to snap the artboards to objects but I want to be able to redraw the artboard freehand as well like I can do in Illustrator.
...and then, the usual heartwarming display of Inkscape team availability and comprehension...

Might help if you add a screencast of what you have in mind.
I have no idea how that feature should look and from you description it does not seem very intuitive to me, but maybe I'm wrong and this would make a nice feature request.
Also try to stick with Inkscape terminology: As an example I have no idea what an "artboard" is (it does not even seem to be an English word either), so I can only guess you mean "canvas".

I suspect it's the 'page' area. Clarification would be helpful.
Was this really necessary? In the future, I'd suggest that if the issue at hand doesn't interest you enough, don't comment. If it does, do the tiniest bit of homework first. I find this behaviour is endemic and pervasive here.
