Fix configure for uncommon shells
same as yoda!204 (merged).
This should fix POSIX strict shells like dash.
Maybe also for release-3-1-x?

The 17.0 major release is coming on May 16, 2024! This version brings many exciting improvements to GitLab, but also removes some deprecated features.
