Performance Issues
iTerm has been using a lot of CPU time, often pushing my MacBook Pro to run the fans. Activity Monitor reports typical Energy Impact around 8-25, and Ave Energy Impact of 150-250. htop typically shows 15-25% CPU usage, but sometimes runs above 80% (always at the top of the list or just below Chrome).
- iTerm2 version: 3.2.6beta3 (but also 3.2.5 and numerous 3.2.5betas)
- OS version: 10.13.6
- Preferences: com.googlecode.iterm2.plist (I've tried deleting my preferences and going back to the default preferences, with only a few minor tweaks)
- Debug log: Since this is a perfromance issue, it isn't clear when to start/stop the debug log or if this is relevant. I'm happy to post if the performance stats are not sufficient.
- Activity Monitor Sample: Sample_of_iTerm2-without-gpu.txt
- Performance Stats (w/ GPU): prefstats-with-gpu.txt
- Performance Stats (w/o GPU): prefstats-no-gpu.txt
- Are you reporting a crash? No
- Are you reporting excessive memory usage? No
Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:
- Any use of iTerm seems to produce the issue.
- Typical usage: running tmux in 6-10 tabs (w/o using the tmux integrations).
- Issues both with and without GPU rendering (ie, on power supply and battery).
- Once I start seeing the issue, it typically continues even when iTerm is idle.
What happened: High CPU usage. High "Energy Impact".
Thanks!
BTW, thank you for this excellent piece of software. I spend most of my day using iTerm and don't know what I'd do without it. It's a shame it took an issue to make me realize how much I value it, and how much better it is than the alternatives.
