command line editing out of sync

Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:
- exec bash -o vi (vi cmdline editing)
What happened: if cmdline is like the following, the editing position is off, i.e. after running a curl command that returns json. If you edit the line the cursor no longer indicates your editing position, but is shifted. The workaround is the ^L and edit.

What should have happened: cmdline editing should compensate for leading chars
