Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:
I'm not entirely sure how I get into this state, but it's happened a few times. It usually starts after I log into another machine over SSH, and then persists until I exit the tab. It almost always starts with when I copy something from the clipboard, I get extra characters on both ends of the string, containing a tilde (~) and a number. At some point, when I start to scroll, I get characters in my shell: "GQ
GQGQ
GQ`GQ" scrolling down, "a+Pa+Pa+Pa+Pa+Pa+Pa+Pa+P" scrolling up. In fact, I just tried it again and now I get different values for scroll up and down.
Trying to highlight text will also send characters: "#W@$W@&W@'W@)W@*W@+W@,W@-W@.W@/W#/W", and the value varies depending on what I'm highlighting. Holding option when I highlight solves this, however.
I have "Scroll wheel sends arrow keys when in altnerate screen mode" seems to make no difference, and I have no value for the Scroll wheel up and down.
I have a feeling this is something silly, (alternate screen mode?), but I don't know how to exit the alternate screen mode.
