Typing or pasting a password in sudo fails

Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:
- Login to a CentOS machine
- execute a command with sudo
- paste the password at the prompt
What happened: Sorry, try again
, and after the 3rd attempt some odd characters are printed:
[sudo] password for boplicity:

What should have happened: the password should have been accepted
