facility to set a fixed string on tab titles

I use iterm2 with multiple panes inside multiple tabs. I do not display pane titles, since I use shell prompts and tmux titles etc to give visual context.
So I have windows with just tab titles.
The title of a tab shows the pane title for the active pane. I would like to override that, ideally by ctlr-click on the tab title and typing a label.
This is because I usually make groups of panes for a specific tasks, so I wish a tab to show the task name, not whatever (wildly varying) pane title happens to be active.
By was of example, I have a work window open at present. It has several tabs, each of which has a collection of panes all associated with a specific task (working on backups, migrating data, debugging various specific issues). I would like to label each tab with a short string of my own devising.
The pane titles are not helpful, as it is infeasible to get every window to emit meaningful title escapes, especially those panes running as users-not-me.
Thanks,
