tmux integration broken with various tmux commands not found

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- start iterm2
- ssh to my server
- type "tmux -CC attach"
What is the expected output?
- the window minimises
- a new window appears with my tmux tabs
What do you see instead?
- the window minimises briefly
- it immediately comes back again, showing this output:
** tmux mode started **
Command Menu
----------------------------
esc Detach cleanly.
X Force-quit tmux mode.
L Toggle logging.
C Run tmux command.
Detached

What version of iTerm2 are you using?
Build 2.9.20141001-nightly
with tmux 1.9a
What OS version are you using?
iterm2 running on OS X 10.9.5
tmux on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (GNU/Linux 2.6.32-44-server x86_64)
Please provide any additional information below.
As far as I know, I didn't change anything between yesterday when it was working and today when it is broken. (It's possible my sysadmin changed something about the underlying system on the server I'm attaching to, but I use my own install of tmux which hasn't changed). I've updated to the latest nightly and it still doesn't work.
