Placement of new windows is not as expected for platform

iTerm2's configuration allows turning off "Smart Window Placement". In that case, one would expect windows to be placed in the same fashion as other OSX programs do: overlapping the active window of the application.
Instead, window placement appear completely random without smart window placement. Smart window placement also doesn't overlap the windows as one might expect at least one of the options would do.
This is very inconvenient because windows get placed on different screens in seemingly random locations, almost always far away from the mouse pointer. In order to arrange my windows in a way that works for me, I need to move each new window to the desired location and the unpredictable window placement makes this quite inconvenient.
Please provide an option that places the windows in the operating system default, overlapped fashion.
