Draw images inside the console with the external program w3mimgpreview|w3m

The "w3m" text based web browser has a fairly recently added feature to render images directly in the terminal. Ranger, a visual text manager, utilises it among other tools. From it's man page:
"PREVIEWS
[..] Independently of the preview script, there is a feature to preview images by drawing them directly into the terminal. This does not work over ssh, requires certain
terminals (tested on "xterm" and "urxvt") and is incompatible with tmux, although it works with screen.
To enable this feature, install the program "w3m" and set the option "preview_images" to true.
"
The current iterm2 builds does not seem to support it. Attaching two screenshots for comparison #1 (closed)) w3m over iterm2 #2 (closed)) w3m over rxvt
