iTerm2 20120123 and tmux precompiled 20120108 seems not to work together.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- install iTerm2 20120123
- install the precompiled tmux 20120108
- attempt to use the "tmux" profile or use tmux with iTerm2
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected would be that I get a genuine tmux session and I can detach from it using the iTerm2 menu options, but I can not. I get a plain shell instead, no tmux features.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
OS-X Lion with latest updates applied. iTerm2 20120123, tmux from the iTerm2 website, precompiled version. The additional library that tmux required I installed via homebrew (same version, so should be correct). iTerm .plist removed and allowed to recreate, twice, no difference.
Please provide any additional information below.
I really don't get it, I have followed the instructions for how to install these bits and it's like iTerm2 don't see/use tmux properly. It's installed in /usr/local/bin/ and I can use it by hand without problems. It's just that the features in iTerm2 that should make use of tmux is not really seeing it or making use of it. Very strange.
Let me know if there is anything you want me to try, I'm game to try some patches etc.
