Icon Redesign (Issue/Epic), Study 1 - Direction 1 vs Direction 2
What’s this issue all about?
The research conducted in #144 (closed) showed that the majority of respondents viewed an
issue + checkmark
icon as best representing a closed issue. The checkmark is viewed as communicating that the issue is approved, completed, or resolved...If we change the current "closed" issue icon toissue + checkmark
, do the other issue/epic/MR state icons need to change as well?
Objective
Investigate whether users understand what the proposed icons mean out of context. Identify which direction is stronger.
- Direction 1: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/ux-research/uploads/2f7b02308336d92973d57449b5927b64/d1.png
- Direction 2: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/ux-research/uploads/71fe1e4330e03ef6512bf2166865abe7/d2.png
Methodology
Design Evaluation via UsabilityHub. * Variation sets to split users between Direction 1 and Direction 2.
- Show the icons one by one, no text label or other interface elements.
- Test with GitLab users only (we want people who are familiar with the product in order to reduce random guesses. We can provide users with some non-leading, contextual information).
What decisions will you make based on the research findings?
This will tell us a) Whether the icons are recognizable/whether users are able to infer what we're trying to depict? (i.e do we need to go back to the drawing board or not?) b) Which of the two directions is stronger.
