Solution validation: Settings interaction & layout

What did we learn?

Insights from solution validation can be found here https://dovetailapp.com/projects/c3e1c2a0-fcfd-449e-9994-5c9f3f4f02af/insights

  • Toggles were preferred to checkboxes because of relation to turning something on/off
  • Using a modal to capture form input is a preferred user experience
  • Having an inline form for adding a branch was usable
  • Laying out content side by side makes everything look in place
  • Toast notification was noticed when changes were made

Takeaway & next steps

This solution validation was light but it helps with the confidence on the general design direction we are doing around standardizing on patterns used for Settings.

We can start looking at creating an issue around documenting the future direction of settings (layout and saving flows), and creating an epic to capture areas of the settings that need the updated add/edit interaction to reduce the amount of content we display initially for settings.

What's this issue all about? (Background and context)

How should inline search work for Settings

What are the overarching goals for the research?

  1. Should we remove toggles in place of checkboxes to simplify interactions of autosaving vs explicit saving
  2. General pattern improvements for Settings (ie. saving, adding)

What hypotheses and/or assumptions do you have?

  1. Checkboxes will be a good enough replacement to toggles
  2. Modals is the right solution for capturing form input when adding/editing items in settings.

What research questions are you trying to answer?

  1. What area do we need to focus on the details when we approach implementation?
  2. Which works in the layout related to search

What persona, persona segment, or customer type experiences the problem most acutely?

Anyone dealing with settings

What business decisions will be made based on this information?

What, if any, relevant prior research already exists?

Who will be leading the research?

@mle

What timescales do you have in mind for the research?

2-3 weeks
