What does this MR do?

This is a continuation of !73241 (merged) and the corresponding issue #337655 (closed) as this made the test much more stable and could be used in this one as well to make it less bridle to longer applying times.

• To ensure a faster turnaround, ask in the #quality Slack channel for someone to review and merge the merge request, rather than assigning it directly.
