Replicate current json gem behaviour in wrapper

What does this MR do?

Replicates the behaviour of the old version of the json gem we currently use. This is transparent as of this MR, but will provide legacy support in the next iteration when the json gem is upgraded.

• Security reports checked/validated by a reviewer from the AppSec team
