Reverts 2a5563b5 in 15-9-stable-ee. These changes were introduced in 15.9 in !111645 (merged) and reverted in !112238 (merged), but the revert was merged after the 15.9 cut, so here we pick those changes into 15.9 so they are fully reverted.
