Documentation for migrating from NFS to Gitaly Cluster
Background
We are deprecating support for NFS in GitLab 14.0.
We have added a note in our documentation explaining this.
Note: We are not planning on introducing breaking changes in 14.0 for those users using NFS, but we will no longer be providing technical support for these users. We also cannot guarantee that breaking changes will not occur in the future.
Feedback from our teams has indicated that this is of concern for many users as they are unclear how to migrate to Gitaly Cluster. As of right now, we do not have clear documentation supporting this migration.
Proposal
The proposal is to create a plan that will give users a clear migration path from NFS to Gitaly Cluster. This path should include documentation updates, perhaps a YouTube video or a blog post. The idea is to ensure that our customer facing support teams have access to not only the knowledge required to assist customers through this transition, but also some documentation to point customers toward which can help describe this in depth.
Existing documentation exists for the following:
Exit Criteria
The exact exit criteria may evolve as this issue is socialized. We will work to keep this section up to date as the conversation evolves.
Create Documentation for Migration
-
Explain the difference between NFS and Gitaly Cluster (ensure we highlight the benefits) -
Point users towards the system requirements (the reference architecture has been updated with Gitaly Cluster at this point, so that should help) -
Provide a suggested path for migrating repositories from NFS storage to Gitaly Cluster
Publicize Migration Materials
-
Ensure support is aware of the documentation updates above -
Ensure customer facing representatives (TAMs, SAs, etc...) are aware of the documentation updates -
(Tentative) - Blog post or YouTube video discussing the migration
