Make sorting by stars the default sort option for project "Explore" page
Overview
In gitlab-foss#47203 (closed), we added the ability to sort the /explore
page by stars.
At the moment, the default sort option is created date (mentioned in https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/260334). This is inferior to stars, since it shows an explore page that's mostly populated by empty projects with almost no activity.
Proposal
The tab structure of the Explore page will be updated as outlined in Modernize sorting and filtering in Explore > Pr... (#434473). As part of the updates to this page, we'll also make the following updates to the default sort order on that page:
- Default sort selection for the "Most starred" tab -->
Stars
, with the most starred appearing first. - Default sort selection for the rest of the tabs (excluding "Most starred") -->
Updated date
, with the most recently updated displaying first. - We'll continue with the behavior where the user's sort selection is saved in the database at the user level. So, after the user changes the sort, that sort will be the default on the user's next visit to the page. If the user is not signed in, we fallback to the default mentioned in response to first question.
