Investigate handling of issues with multiple assignees in column lists and swimlanes
Problem to solve
How might we allow users to understand what work is assigned to them at any stage, even if the issue is also assigned to someone else?
Rough JTBD: When reviewing work in flight, I want to how my assigned issues are moving through the workflow, so that I can prioritize accordingly and refine based on my capacity.
Scenario: If Issue ABC is assigned to both Jane and Bob, how might we best display to both Jane and Bob that they need to focus on Issue ABC?
- How does this change when swimlanes are applied?
- How does this change if both Jane and Bob have an assignee list dedicated to them in the same board?
- How does this change if the board has both an
assignee
swimlane and dedicated assignee lists? Would this be possible?
User experience goal
Users understand the scope of their work from looking at their assigned swimlane or list regardless of how many people are assigned to any individual issue.
Proposal
Currently if an issue is assigned to multiple users it will show up in a board multiple times. For example- if Jane and Bob are both assigned to Issue ABC and there are Bob
and Jane
lists on the board, Issue ABC
will appear in both Bob
list and Jane
list.
For MVC of swimlanes, we could replicate this behavior. If there is a Bob
swimlane and a Jane
swimlane.. Issue ABC
will appear in both the Bob
and Jane
swimlanes within the UX
column for example.
Assignee lists (current) | Swimlane rows (proposed) |

Further details
- What could be the risks here?
- If an issue is assigned to 3 users and shows up in the board 3 times- should we somehow indicate that an issue is a "duplicate"?
- How might it be misleading to see the issue card in multiple places, if it is? How would this impact the counts or reporting?
